A new location, new blog, summer sessions continue

Happy Summer ! Now that our figure drawing sessions are no longer being held at Hopper House, I have created a new blog! So from here on out, updates and postings can be found at the new blog site NYACK CENTER FIGURE DRAWING SUMMER SESSIONS WILL CONTINUE FOR NEXT 6 WEEKS. Final Summer session is AUGUST 11th. We will BREAK, and pick up our weekly sessions in the FALL as of SEPT. 8th. We are still affiliated with Hopper House; our annual December show 'Focus on the Figure' will be in the Hopper gallery. The theme of that show will be Hopper-inspired work, so in the Fall we'll be setting some sessions where we pose models to re-create Hopper scenes. Once dates and themes are set, I'll put a notice on this blog as well as email out to the artists.

Great session! With Nyack Center as our new permanent home, it's been working out wonderfully. We will then take a 3 week break and return second week of September. Nyack Center is now our permanent figure drawing location, as Hopper House is no longer able to house our sketching sessions due to insurance issues. However, we will have our annual show in Dec 'Focus on the Figure' in the HH galleries, with the focus on Hopper inspired figurative works.

Kris Burns is gathering another Flash Mob this Friday- they are meeting at the Hopper House at 8:30pm and then dispersing to benches all over the village and occupying them at 9:30. Flash mobs are people who will show up and hold positions/poses during the set time in different locations. Our own Christie Washburn has a studio; 24U, in the first building on the right from the main entrance. A vast array of creativity and many activities. DIRECTIONS: FROM TAPPAN ZEE BRIDGE [NYC via THRUWAY - 20 minutes from Tappan Zee] Take I-287 West over Tappan Zee Bridge. Take the Palisades Parkway North exit. #13N. Continue on Palisades Parkway North to Exit 13. Make a left off exit ramp onto Thiells Mt. Ivy Rd. (you will be passing a Golf Course on your left). Follow to the end and make a Right onto Suffern Lane. Go straight for approximately 2 miles through traffic light (at traffic light Suffern Lane becomes West Railroad Ave). From this point, Garnerville Arts and Industrial Center is 1/4 mile down on your right hand side. FROM PALISADES PARKWAY [NYC via GW BRIDGE - 45 minutes from GW] GW Bridge upper roadway across bridge. Take Palisades Parkway North to Exit 13. Make a Left off exit ramp onto Thiells Mt. Ivy Rd. [If coming on Palisades Parkway from the North, make a Left off exit ramp and another Left at the light onto Thiells Mt. Ivy Rd.] You will pass a Golf Course on your left. Figure Drawing MOVING TO NYACK CENTER MARCH 31

As of March 31st we will be meeting and drawing at Nyack Center through April/May/June, then after summer break we will likely return to Hopper House in September. They have asked us to move due to sensitive and precious artwork that will be hanging in the galleries soon. Nyack Center will be a great place for us to draw. It is literally a short walk south on Broadway from Hopper House, located at South Broadway/corner of Depew, enter in the back. We have the back room, a nice large space that should suit us perfectly. I'll remind everyone, but mark your calendars now!

A reminder to all: if you want to be in this year's show, you'll need to bring in framed work to Hopper House by Sunday Nov 28th or Monday Nov 29th. The show will open Saturday Dec. 4 from 5-7 pm and the work will hang in the Hopper galleries through the holidays, closing on Jan. 2. I think the work we've been doing in these sessions has been incredible. Work must be framed, and up to two pieces submitted. I will review art this Thursday from 7:45-10 pm if you would like my feedback on what to submit. We will NOT have a session next Thurdsay, Thanksgiving only.

Summer arts program

Over the summer, Melanie Rodriguez and several mentor artists from our figure drawing ran a 7 week workshop for youth in arts. Funding was provided by a generous donation from Rod Rodriguez and also via our figure drawing program. Beautiful art was created, and even had a showing in town. Huge thanks to Melanie for bringing the talented mentors together and running such a successful program; and huge thanks to those mentors who volunteered. One to One mentor teaching summer workshop with 10 YMCA students... all supplies provided bu donation, time , love , paint , canvases and food... Our artist and resident photographer was- Sarah Bloom with Priya Greg (Student) -We have Tara Holland (our 16 yr old artist teacher- with Chelsea Frazer (her student painter - Ted Gusek (teacher) with Ta'Ran Tann (African Merican Male Student Painter) -Stephan Mannion (teacher) with Annette Jean-Lois (Student painter) -Julie Ng (18 yr. old student teacher) with Tashina Bradshaw (student painter) -Alyssa Ranker (artist teacher) with Laura Harris (student paniter) -Rodd Rodriguez (teaching Artist) with Mikaela Filsaime (student -Melanie Rodriguez (teacher) with Andrew Mayers (student Artist) -John Ryan Solis (atist teacher) with Wendy Pierre-Jean (student painter) Also Gretchen Kane (does other children's workshops with HH) volunteered one session with YMCA's Mariah Salter (who painted the only Horizontal painting (TIM BURTON'S MAD HATTER'S EYES)... IT WAS WONDERFUL!

It was such a great night of sketching. Our model, Tania, brought the best out in all of us. And what a group of diverse and gifted artists, who include: Mariet Van derHeide, Emily Keppler, Sammy Wilson, Tara Holland, Maruice Hybel, Solange Hybel, Alyssa Ranker, Russell Eike, Allan Rosenberg, Grace Belmonte, Mark Hagan, Christie Washburn, Juliane Ng, and Janet Hamlin.

Our models held perfect poses, and we were able to come pretty close to original scenes that looked quite like the Hopper paintings we set out to re-create. I have uploaded the original Hopper work, a photo of the scene, and the studies that came out of the session. Just wonderful. Our artists include: Alyssa Ranker, Mark Hagar, Jim McNaughton, Janine Clark, Tara Holland, Russ Eike, Grace Belmonte, Joyce Blossom, Melanie Rodriguez, Christie Washburn, Juline Ng, Liz Sayles, Jessie Dow, Janine Clarke, and Janet Hamlin. Our models were Nick and Sara holding the male/female poses, and Leigh in individual female poses.

Next thursday Sept. 30th we are having a very special event, posing two scenes based on Hopper paintings and doing our own viewpoint and studies of them. The paintings we are going to emulate are on this flier. Bring your camera to shoot your viewpoint so you can continue your work after the pose is over. Also, dress warmly as one pose will be out on the porch, weather permitting. See you next Thursday!
